The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Farm with Soul on the Southern Funen Coast

Gl. Brydegaard sits on the road to Helnæs, just a few hundred metres from Åkrog Bugt on the island of Funen. The setting is a handsome old farm that has grown into a hotel, conference centre, and restaurant — the kind of place where, as one guest put it, you can "breathe all the way down to your stomach." Fields, forest, and a short walk to the beach frame the whole experience, and a new wellness area with a panorama sauna and outdoor cold plunge adds another reason to linger.

Classic Cooking, Local Ingredients

The kitchen's commitment is straightforward: local, organic, seasonal produce, treated with care rather than spectacle. The White Guide awarded Gl. Brydegaard its Fine level recognition in 2026, praising exactly that approach — "well-executed classic cooking with ingredients of the highest quality," with no daring experiments getting in the way of honest pleasure.

Fresh fish from the nearby waters appears regularly on the plates. A standout from the White Guide's visit was a slow-cooked veal shank, brought to low-temperature tenderness in the oven, then sliced thick and served with grilled cabbage, a creamy sauce, and large crisp sweet peas — buttery, flavourful, and deeply satisfying. The cheese course is a purely Danish affair, and dessert leads naturally into the cosy lounge, where a game of chess, coffee with a splash of arak, and an extensive gin tonic selection await.

The Wine List and a House Ale Worth Knowing

The wine list is well curated, and a matching wine menu is offered — thoughtfully available in a take-away version with slightly smaller pours for designated drivers. For those skipping wine, the house India pale ale, brewed by Kunstbryggeriet Far & Søn in Svendborg, is hop-aromatic and bitter yet well balanced: a fine companion to the seasonal cooking.

The Atmosphere

Service is young, informal, and genuinely warm. Guests describe the staff by name — Manja helping arrange a birthday surprise, Bertram steering an evening with quiet expertise in food and wine. That personal attentiveness, set against the calm of the farmland, gives Gl. Brydegaard a character that larger venues rarely manage.

White Guide — Fine level

You’reasking about natural surroundings a few hundred meters from Åkrog Bugt on the road to Helnæs, where Gl. Brydegaard is located—a beautiful old farm that now operates as a hotel, conference centre, and, not least, a restaurant. The kitchen uses, as much as possible, local organic seasonal ingredients, which of course ensures delicious fresh fish on the plates, as well as good meat—such as a wonderful veal shank that is slow‑cooked at low temperature in the oven and then sliced into thick pieces. The meat is buttery and flavorful and is served with grilled cabbage, a creamy sauce, and large crisp sweet peas. Here at the farm you are not subjected to any daring gastronomic experiments, but can enjoy well‑executed classic cooking with ingredients of the highest quality. The wine list is quite well curated, and additionally a wine menu is offered that matches the dishes—also in a take‑away version with slightly smaller glasses for any drivers. If you’re not in the mood for wine, we can recommend the house’s own India pale ale, brewed by Kunstbryggeriet Far & Søn in Svendborg; it is hop‑aromatic and bitter yet well balanced. The serving staff is young and informal, always smiling and friendly, and a particularly pleasant atmosphere pervades the place. After the purely Danish cheese platter and dessert, we move into the cozy lounge, where you can play a game of chess while first enjoying coffee with a splash of arak, and then exploring the extensive selection of gin tonics.
