A Big Idea for a Small Bar

Le Petit Bar was born from a clear-eyed observation: despite Grand Cayman's cosmopolitan appetite, most licensed establishments offered only a handful of uninspired wines by the glass. Shalico Christian — who had spent more than 20 years in the hospitality sector across the Cayman Islands and Canada, and had helped build WINESCHOOL3 into the region's leading educator for wine and spirits — decided to do something about it. In November 2022, the idea became a reality when Le Petit Bar opened at the Jacques Scott Plaza in West Bay.

The People Behind the Pours

The wine program is curated by sommelier Christian Esser, WINESCHOOL3's lead educator, who brings decades of hands-on experience visiting wine regions across the globe. The cocktail menu is the work of a Diageo World Class competition winner, which means every drink — from low-alcohol options to creations featuring rare spirits from the Far East — is built on serious craft rather than novelty. Together, the two form the backbone of what Wine Spectator recognised with its Award of Excellence in 2023, a distinction that reflects both the depth of the list and the knowledge behind it.

What's in the Glass

Over 40 wines are available by the glass at any given time, served in 3-ounce or 5-ounce pours, with more than 150 labels available by the bottle. The spirits collection runs to over 230 expressions from around the world, and a rotating cast of creative cocktails keeps things lively. The Caribbean and French influences that shape the bar's character show up not just in the drinks but in the food: build-your-own cheese and charcuterie boards are assembled from artisan producers worldwide, and the kitchen turns out house-made terrines alongside canapes such as Welsh rarebit fritters, beef short rib croquettes, and chicken liver parfait beignets.

The Space and the Spirit

The room is intimate and deliberately unfussy — soft lighting, comfortable seating, and walls hung with paintings by rising Caymanian artist John Reno Jackson, whose work also appears on the labels of Christian Esser's private wine selections. WINESCHOOL3 holds its classes here on Mondays and Tuesdays, so on any given evening you might find yourself sitting beside someone who just learned to identify the difference between Burgundy and Beaujolais. The slogan is "Liquid Lively Fun," and the atmosphere earns it — a place equally suited to a glass after work, a pre-dinner aperitif, or a proper late-night nightcap.
