The story
For years, friends Paolo Polloni and Andi Marcher worked across Europe and the Cayman Islands, quietly building toward a shared goal: opening an Italian restaurant so good that people would want to return again and again. In the summer of 1999, that goal became Ragazzi Ristorante and Pizzeria. More than two decades on, the restaurant at Buckingham Square on West Bay Road remains one of the island's most consistently beloved dining addresses.
The space itself sets the tone immediately. Blond woods, periwinkle walls and columns, and handsome artworks of beach scenes, sailboats, and palm trees give the airy room a relaxed, convivial character. It buzzes with the kind of easy energy that comes from a place where regulars feel genuinely at home and first-timers quickly understand why others keep coming back.
Head Chef Luca Cocchieri brings a thoroughly Italian foundation to the menu. Originally from Papozze, a small town in the Veneto region about 50 kilometres southwest of Venice, he began culinary school at 14, inspired by time spent cooking alongside his grandmother. He went on to build his skills working across Italy before arriving at Ragazzi.
The Italian menu spans antipasti, pasta, pizza from an authentic wood-burning oven, meat, and seafood. Dishes that guests return to specifically include the gnocchi — praised by one visitor as the best they had ever tasted — as well as the orecchiette, shellfish linguini, lobster garlic cream pasta, and a beef carpaccio to start. The yellowfin tuna from the seafood section has drawn equally strong reactions. For those who cannot choose between two pasta dishes, the kitchen has been known to accommodate half portions of each — a small gesture that says a great deal about the spirit of the place.
The wine program at Ragazzi is one of the most decorated in the Cayman Islands. Anchored by bottles from Italy's great wine-producing regions and complemented by a broader international selection, the list has earned Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence every year since the restaurant opened — recognition that speaks to the depth and consistency of the cellar. It is the kind of list that rewards exploration alongside a long Italian meal.
Ragazzi describes itself simply: it is about good food, love, friendship, and family. That ethos runs through everything — from the team's evident pride in their work to the warm, attentive service that guests single out in their feedback. The restaurant accommodates private parties, offers a set lunch menu, and provides outdoor seating, valet parking, and takeaway for those who prefer to dine elsewhere. Whether a first visit or a regular table, Ragazzi delivers the kind of Italian hospitality that makes the island feel a little smaller and a great deal more welcoming.
