The story
Two blocks from Victoria's Inner Harbour, The Courtney Room occupies a space that feels both unhurried and alive. High ceilings, Art Nouveau layering, commissioned abstract expressionist work by Blu Smith, and a central black granite bar framed by wood columns with white marble chevron detail — the room was conceived by designer Sharon Bortolotto of BBA Design with the grand hotel bistros of Paris in mind, and it shows. The result is casually elegant: the kind of place that works equally well for a weekday lunch and a proper celebration.
The kitchen's approach is ingredient-first, rooted in classic European technique and shaped entirely by what Vancouver Island produces. Menus rotate with the seasons and are built around partnerships with local farmers, in-house dry-aged natural beef, and sustainable seafood. Nothing is fixed for long — the philosophy, as the restaurant puts it, is "ever changing, always evolving." That commitment to the island's terroir earned The Courtney Room the title of Restaurant of the Year at the 2024 YAM Magazine Best Restaurant Awards, a recognition that reflects both the kitchen's consistency and its ambition within Pacific Northwestern cuisine.
The wine program is among the most decorated in British Columbia. It has earned Platinum Distinction at the Vancouver International Wine Festival's Wine Program Excellence Awards in both 2024 and 2025, and took Best Sommelier/Wine Program at the YAM Restaurant Awards in consecutive years. The selections balance recognized classics with lesser-known producers and regions, always with an eye toward quality and a sense of place — mirroring the food's own philosophy. Wine Spectator recognized the program with its Award of Excellence in 2024, further cementing The Courtney Room's standing as a serious wine destination.
The bar program draws from the same coastal sensibility that defines the kitchen. Locally foraged ingredients, in-house ferments, and a team that respects the traditions of great hotel bars while pushing into the flavors of the Pacific Northwest — it's a program that earned a Top 10 nomination for Best International Hotel Bar in Canada at the 2023 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards. Classic cocktails are executed with care; the more experimental offerings reflect the bioregion with genuine curiosity rather than novelty.
The Courtney Room is part of the Magnolia Hotel & Spa, and that context matters. The hospitality is attentive without being stiff, and the room accommodates everything from a seat at the bar to a private celebration. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served, making it one of the few fine dining addresses in Victoria where the kitchen is genuinely engaged at every hour of the day.
