The story
Since 1998, La Terrazza has been the cornerstone of Italian fine dining in Vancouver's Yaletown district. Chef-owner Gennaro Iorio, alongside partners Giulio Miceli and Iqbal Grewal, has spent more than 25 years welcoming guests to a room that takes its cooking seriously without losing its warmth. The philosophy is direct: respect the ingredient. D.O.P. olive oils, San Marzano tomatoes, and Parmigiano-Reggiano arrive weekly from Italy, while seasonal produce and seafood come straight from British Columbia's Fraser Valley.
That commitment to sourcing is what gives the menu its particular character — Italian tradition grounded in West Coast reality.
The à la carte menu moves confidently between land and sea. From the ocean, Haida Gwaii sablefish arrives glazed with Quebec maple and ginger, served over wild mushroom risotto. A King Crab Cioppino brings together king crab, jumbo tiger prawns, clams, honey mussels, and local fish in a saffron tomato garlic broth. On the land side, a 16 oz. milk-fed veal chop and a 40 oz. Certified Canadian Angus Beef Porterhouse speak to the kitchen's range.
The pasta section is where the Italian soul of the restaurant shows most clearly. Chef Gennaro's Strozzapreti Bolognese is listed simply as "his famous recipe" — a confidence earned over decades. House-made potato gnocchi with burrata and San Marzano tomato sauce, and a Spaghettini Lobster Carbonara with Atlantic lobster and Applewood bacon, round out a selection where every dish is finished with, as the menu notes, "a generous amount of Parmigiano-Reggiano."
Desserts hold the same attention to detail: a layered Tiramisu with housemade ladyfingers and espresso Kahlúa mousse, and a warm white chocolate mascarpone cheesecake wrapped in phyllo pastry called La Creazione.
Wine is not an afterthought here. La Terrazza holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence — recognition that reflects a cellar of some 2,000 bottles curated by an in-house sommelier team. Every dish on the menu is composed, in part, to find its partner among the Italian wines on the list. Guests can follow the sommelier's lead or chart their own course through one of Vancouver's most extensive collections.
Beyond the main dining room, La Terrazza offers private spaces suited to wedding receptions, corporate gatherings, and anniversary dinners. The room's Italian atmosphere — built over 25 years rather than styled overnight — lends these occasions a weight that purpose-built event venues rarely match.
For anyone seeking fine Italian cuisine in downtown Vancouver, La Terrazza remains a considered, enduring choice.
