Stelvio

Stelvio brings the rarely exported flavours of Lombardy to Toronto's Dundas West, recognized by Gambero Rosso for its regional Italian cooking.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Corner of Lombardy on Dundas West

Stelvio was born from a specific longing: to bring the food of Lombardy — one of Italy's most distinctive culinary regions — to Toronto. As General Manager Anna Erba puts it, "Our goal is for guests dining at Stelvio in Toronto to savour the same flavours of the Risotto with Ossobuco that a guest dining in Milan or Lombardy would." That clarity of purpose is rare, and it shows on the plate.

The restaurant's own story acknowledges what makes this concept unusual: even within Italy, authentic Lombardy cuisine is difficult to find outside the region itself. Stelvio doesn't try to be a generic Italian restaurant. It commits to a place — the valleys, lakes, and cities of northern Italy — and draws its entire menu from there.

The Food of Northern Italy

The menu reads like a tour of Lombard tradition. Pizzoccheri di Teglio, the buckwheat pasta from Valtellina, arrives coated in a three-cheese sauce with savoy cabbage, potatoes, butter, and sage. Casoncelli alla Bergamasca — homemade ravioli filled with ground veal, pork, amaretti, and raisins, finished with butter, sage, and crispy speck — comes straight from Bergamo. The Risotto alla Milanese con Ossobuco, made with saffron Aironi Carnaroli rice and topped with white braised veal shank, is the dish that defines the city of Milan.

Among the secondi, the Orecchia di Elefante — a giant, breaded and fried pork-loin cutlet — is a showpiece both visually and in flavour. Sciatt, deep-fried buckwheat fritters with a molten cheese centre, represent the indigenous cooking of Valtellina. These are not approximations; they are the real dishes, prepared with the same faithfulness to recipe that northern Italian cooking demands.

Gambero Rosso, the authoritative Italian food guide, awarded Stelvio its Fork recognition in 2025 — a meaningful distinction for a restaurant outside Italy carrying the flag of such a specific and demanding regional tradition.

Atmosphere and Reach

Guests describe the atmosphere as warm and welcoming, with service that matches the care put into the food. The restaurant also offers pasta classes and a semi-private area for events, and has extended its reach through AMANS by Stelvio, a corporate catering offshoot focused on fresh, customizable lunches. There is even a sister location in Milan itself, on Via Sebenico — a full-circle moment for a project that started with a dream of bringing Lombardy to the world.

At 791 Dundas St. W, Stelvio remains one of Toronto's most distinctive expressions of northern Italian cuisine: specific, honest, and quietly confident.
