Il Teatro

Contemporary Italian cuisine in the heart of Old Québec, with a celebrated wine cellar, a stunning covered terrace, and a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

On Rue Saint-Jean, steps from Place d'Youville in the heart of Old Québec, Il Teatro stages contemporary Italian cuisine in a setting that bridges eras. The décor pairs old-world character with modern sensibility, the wine cellar draws on the tradition of Italian cantine, and the fully covered, heated terrace is among the most inviting in the city — a rare thing in a Quebec winter.

The restaurant's own description puts it plainly: "un personnel soigné qui maîtrise l'art de vous recevoir" — a staff that has mastered the art of welcome. That attention to hospitality, combined with a serious approach to Italian food and wine, earned Il Teatro the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2024, a recognition that speaks directly to the depth and curation of its cellar.

What's on the Plate

The menu is grounded in Italian classics, handled with care and a nod to local sourcing. Pasta is a clear strength: Carbonara arrives in its Roman form — spaghetti, guanciale, pecorino — while the Linguine ai Gamberi brings in Matane shrimp with lemon butter and gremolata, a quiet nod to the St. Lawrence. The Agnolotti di Cavolfiore al Piave — cauliflower and aged Piave cheese folded into fresh pasta with hazelnuts — shows the kitchen's more considered side. For mains, the Osso Buco features a 16 oz. Quebec veal shank over creamy polenta with gremolata, a dish that earns its place on any serious Italian menu.

Starters range from a clean Cacio e Pepe arancino to Burrata d'Amore with heirloom tomatoes, peaches, and pistachios. Pizzas — including a Mortadella with maple ricotta and pistachio mortadella — round out a menu that covers considerable ground without losing focus.

Seasonal cocktails, a chef's table, private rooms for events, and complimentary valet parking complete the picture. Il Teatro has since expanded to Montréal's Quartier des spectacles, but the Québec address on Rue Saint-Jean remains the original stage.
