The story
The name goes back to 1886, when the village of Callander was officially incorporated on the south-east bay of Lake Nipissing — a community founded by a Scottish-born bookkeeper who crossed the lake by raft with his family and built something lasting. 1886 Lake House Bistro carries that founding spirit into its dining room: hand-crafted butcher-block tables, barn-board accents, black-and-white photography, and a come-as-you-are atmosphere that makes equal room for flip-flops off the boat launch and date-night dress.
Born in North Bay, Chef/Owner Greg Luckey returned to his roots after years in Burlington kitchens, most notably as sous chef at Canyon Creek Chophouse. He learned to cook young, fitting sessions between family sports commitments, then formalised that passion through an apprenticeship. In 2024 he earned his Red Seal Certification from the College of Trades — a professional benchmark that also made the 1886 kitchen an accredited apprenticeship training facility for the next generation of cooks.
The menu he runs is classic American-French bistro with a comfort-forward twist: seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers in Powassan, Trout Creek, and Sturgeon, assembled into dishes that guests keep coming back for. Guests have singled out the pork belly appetizer and the Nipissing burger by name, and the kitchen accommodates gluten-free requirements with care.
The wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — recognition that reflects a list guests describe as having "something for everyone, and every occasion." The cocktail menu is equally considered: handcrafted signatures like the 1886 Caesar (built with fresh-grated horseradish, pickled asparagus, and Sambal Oelek) and the Rain, Ice & Snow (raspberry-infused vodka, ice wine, pineapple juice) sit alongside a rotating tap selection drawn from Ontario craft breweries including Gateway City in North Bay, Sawdust City in Gravenhurst, and Manitoulin Brewing.
The bistro runs a calendar of Chef's Specialty Dinners — winemaker evenings, themed feasts, and seasonal celebrations — that regularly sell out. For something more private, Chef Greg offers a "Chef at Home" experience: he consults on a custom menu, visits your kitchen in advance, arrives an hour before service, cooks everything fresh on site, and leaves the kitchen spotless. It's the full American-French bistro treatment, brought to your table anywhere within 50 km of Callander Bay.
Families are genuinely welcome — the children's menu runs to battered pickerel, Arctic char, and handmade noodles, all at accessible prices. Reservations are available through the winter season; summer is walk-in only, when the patio opens onto the bay.
