The story
Restaurant Vendôme occupies a singular position in German gastronomy. Housed within the Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg — one of Germany's largest baroque castles, a short drive from Cologne — it has held two Michelin stars and earned five red toques from Gault&Millau, making it one of the country's undisputed top addresses. For a decade running, from 2008 through 2017, it appeared continuously in the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, reaching as high as number 10 in 2013 — a sustained record of recognition that few German restaurants have matched.
As of October 2025, a significant transition has taken place. After 25 years at the helm of Vendôme, Joachim Wissler handed culinary leadership to Dennis Kuckuck, his long-standing sous chef and trusted collaborator. Wissler described the move as one of continuity, and Kuckuck's ascent — shaped entirely within this kitchen — reflects exactly that. The cooking remains what the restaurant has always promised: provocative, modern, and unforgettable.
Guests choose between two tasting formats. Menu I draws on the best from land and sea across five or seven courses; Menu II is built entirely from plant-based components, a vegetarian counterpart that stands as an innovation in its own right rather than an afterthought. Snacks from the current menu include a tomato baguette, shiso tempura with avocado, a baked wasabi crouton, and an artichoke cupcake — small compositions that set the register for what follows. Desserts and petits fours come from Larissa Metz, named Pastry Chef of the Year 2025 by Der Feinschmecker and recognised by FAZ Lieblinge des Jahres 2024/2025.
The wine program is overseen by sommelier Dennis Ruhl and Christoph Strahl, with particular attention to matching each course. Rare bottles are available through the Coravin system, and the cellar leans heavily toward Burgundy. Non-alcoholic pairings are produced in the restaurant's own in-house manufactory.
The castle dining room carries the weight of the baroque architecture around it without feeling frozen in it. The Modern European cooking — precise, technically ambitious, and grounded in seasonal produce — sits in deliberate contrast to the grandeur of the surroundings. Private dining is available for events ranging from weddings and birthdays to corporate occasions, and exclusive lunch events are held throughout the year. For those who wish to extend the experience, overnight packages combine a stay in one of the hotel's castle rooms with a five- or eight-course dinner at Vendôme.
