The story
Via Napoli Pizzeria was built on a very specific inheritance. Founder and head chef Luigi Esposito was born and raised in Naples, and by the age of eight he was already helping his grandparents sell pagniottiello and pizza fritta on the streets of the city. By fifteen, he had joined the Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani, committed to preserving the cultural integrity of true Neapolitan technique. He went on to work in respected pizzerias across Naples and Europe before bringing his craft — and his family's recipes — to Sydney.
That background is not incidental. It shapes everything at Via Napoli, from the lava stone lining the wood-fired ovens (sourced from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius) to the Solania San Marzano tomatoes on every pizza base.
The menu is rooted in Neapolitan pizza tradition: hand-stretched dough, Fior di Latte or Buffalo Mozzarella, and a fast, fierce bake that produces the soft, airy, lightly charred crust the style is known for. Classics like the Margherita and Napoletana sit alongside more distinctive options — the Truffle (white base, Buffalo Mozzarella, Pancetta, Black Truffle), the Via Napoli Kiss (San Marzano, Extra Hot Neapolitan Salami, Spicy Truffle Honey), and the Pizza Lasagna, which layers Buffalo Ricotta and Nonna Giuseppina's beef meatballs on a tomato base.
Beyond pizza, the kitchen turns out fresh pasta — including handmade Spaghetti Chitarra and slow-cooked Pappardelle Bolognese — alongside antipasti and traditional Italian salads. The pizza fritta draws its own loyal following, and diners regularly single out the tiramisu.
Gambero Rosso, the authoritative Italian food guide, has recognised Via Napoli among its top Italian restaurants — a meaningful endorsement for a pizzeria operating far from Naples. That recognition sits alongside a consistent track record of local acclaim: multiple Most Outstanding Restaurant wins at the Northern Districts Local Business Awards, appearances in the Good Food Guide and Sydney Morning Herald, and a spot in Big 7 Travel's Top 50 Best Pizza in the World.
The dining room carries the warmth of the source material — Pulcinella masks, strings of chillies, hanging prosciuttos, and wheels of Parmigiano. It is loud in the way that good Italian restaurants tend to be: full of people, full of energy. As one regular diner from Naples put it, "This pizzeria is the real deal: the dough is perfectly light and chewy."
Via Napoli operates two Sydney locations — Lane Cove on the North Shore and Surry Hills in the inner city — and extends its offering to catering, group dining, and mobile wood-fired oven hire for events. The Lane Cove address at 141 Longueville Road is the original neighbourhood home of what has become one of Sydney's most decorated authentic Neapolitan pizza destinations.
