The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Sydney Institution on the Water

For over 25 years, Otto Ristorante has held its place as one of Sydney's most respected and consistently beloved restaurants. Perched on the Finger Wharf at Woolloomooloo, it offers something genuinely rare: a waterfront setting that feels spectacular without being showy, paired with modern Italian food that earns its loyal following meal after meal. That combination of place, people and la dolce vita has earned Otto recognition from both the Good Food Guide — where it holds a coveted One Hat — and Gambero Rosso, Italy's foremost food authority, cementing its standing beyond Sydney's dining scene.

The Kitchen: Simple, Seasonal, Produce-Driven

Head Chef Richard Ptacnik has been the driving force in Otto's kitchen since 2004, taking the helm as Head Chef in late 2009. His cooking philosophy is, in his own words, "unashamedly simple — modern Italian with roots firmly placed in the classics." Before Sydney, Ptacnik trained with leading chefs across Berlin, Switzerland and his native Prague, and that European grounding shapes everything on the plate. The menu is à la carte, built around fresh and seasonal produce sourced with care, then allowed to speak for itself. Think perfectly al dente saffron linguine, or local John Dory from the wood grill finished simply with butter sauce — food that captures everything people love about the Italian approach to eating.

The wine list follows the same philosophy: local Australian wines that lean toward Italy in style and texture, alongside true Italian bottles. Restaurant Manager Francesco "Frankie" Bondi — who joined as Head Sommelier in 2023 after training at the Sydney Wine Academy — brings genuine Italian hospitality and deep wine knowledge to every table.

The Room and the Experience

The setting on Woolloomooloo's Finger Wharf is as much a part of the experience as the food. Al fresco dining with waterside views and a sparkling city backdrop gives Otto its trademark atmosphere — approachable yet refined, without a trace of pretension. The long-standing team, led at group level by General Manager Graham Ackling (with Otto since 2003), ensures the service matches the surroundings: warm, attentive and consistent.

For groups, the iconic Mangia! Share Menu — Italian for "eat," an invitation to feast — brings Otto's signature dishes to the table in generous, convivial portions. The full Mangia! is $89 per person; a lighter Mini Mangia! at $69 per person suits smaller gatherings. A beverage package curated by the sommelier rounds out the experience with a spritz on arrival and a selection of Italian-leaning wines.

Event spaces both upstairs and downstairs, including a private terrazzo with waterfront views, make Otto a natural choice for private dining and celebrations of all scales.
