The story
Nestled on Glen Eira Road in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Ripponlea, Attica is an Australian restaurant in both location and spirit. Since opening its doors over twenty years ago, it has become one of the most celebrated dining destinations in the world — earning a place in The World's 50 Best Restaurants every year from 2013 to 2018, reaching as high as #20 in 2018. Yet for all its international acclaim, Attica remains deeply, proudly local.
The restaurant opens with a meaningful acknowledgement: the land on which Attica sits belongs to the Bunurong people, the first sovereign nation of this country. This respect for place and people is not incidental — it is fundamental to everything on the plate.
At the helm is chef, restaurateur, and storyteller Ben Shewry, whose creative practice shapes every facet of the Attica experience. Shewry's philosophy is deliberately not "fine dining" — he calls it ambitious dining. There are no dress codes, just carefully curated playlists. Guests may be asked to eat with their hands. And you won't find caviar or lobster on the menu.
Instead, Attica's kitchen turns to the unique and extraordinary bounty of the Australian landscape. Expect dishes crafted with native ingredients that tell stories few kitchens dare to tell — including, famously, a rack of ribs that comes from crocodile, not cow.
Attica's multi-course tasting menu, priced at $385, changes with the seasons but is always guided by a consistent and coherent philosophy: celebrate what this country grows, produces, and has cultivated across thousands of years of culinary culture. The kitchen works exclusively with producers and suppliers who share its commitment to ethical business practices.
The drinks programme is equally considered. A sommelier-curated alcoholic pairing ($265), a non-alcoholic pairing ($130), and a combination of both ($210) are all on offer, alongside house-made native botanical cocktails — think anise myrtle gin, saltbush tequila, and Davo plum aperitivo.
For more than two decades, Attica has been woven into Melbourne's most meaningful occasions. The restaurant offers semi-private dining for groups of eight to eighteen in its charcoal room or cellar section, and exclusive hire of the full venue for up to sixty guests — ideal for weddings, milestone birthdays, or luxury events. The values underpinning it all: excellence, kindness, creativity, and fun.
