The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Gathering Place Since 1951

For more than 70 years, Huset has been woven into the fabric of life in Longyearbyen. Originally built by Store Norske and completed in 1951, it served as a café, cinema, school, post office, and social hub for the mining community. Today, under the stewardship of Hurtigruten Svalbard, it has been transformed into an internationally recognised dining destination – yet its purpose remains unchanged: bringing people together.

In 2026, the restaurant underwent a complete redesign by renowned Norwegian architects Snøhetta. The new interior draws inspiration from the dramatic contrasts of Svalbard – polar night and midnight sun, wilderness and refinement – creating a warm, contemporary space that honours the building's history.

The Taste of Svalbard

Head Chef Alberto Lozano leads the kitchen, working closely with local hunters, fishers, and foragers. Originally from Spain, his culinary journey has taken him through some of Europe's leading kitchens before bringing him to the High Arctic. His cooking combines Spanish warmth, French technique, and Nordic restraint – a style that mirrors the restaurant's dual Scandinavian and Spanish influences.

The menu is a 14-course Arctic Experience tasting menu, priced at NOK 3,100. It celebrates local game, Arctic seafood, foraged plants, and ingredients preserved at their seasonal peak through fermentation, curing, and pickling. Many herbs and microgreens are grown on-site. As Chef Lozano says, "Everything starts with what we can find here. The fjords, the tundra, the seasons, and we build from there."

A Wine Cellar Worth Travelling For

Beneath the restaurant lies one of Scandinavia's most remarkable wine collections, earning Huset the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2023. The cellar offers guided tastings and carefully curated pairings – from a prestige pairing at NOK 2,900 to an alcohol-free option at NOK 750. Restaurant Manager & Head Sommelier Maxime Resse oversees the wine program, ensuring each glass complements the Arctic flavours on the plate.

Whether you come for the northern lights, the glaciers, or simply the experience of dining at the edge of the world, Huset delivers a meal that could only exist here.
