The story
Pêtchi, a Jèrriais word meaning “to try to catch a fish,” captures the ethos of this wood-fired grill restaurant in Saint Helier. Chef-owner Joe Baker and his wife Charlotte draw inspiration from the seascapes of the Channel Islands and the cooking traditions of the Basque Country. The name reflects the pursuit of perfect produce and local bounty, served in a fun, relaxed atmosphere that centres around an open kitchen. The result is a modern interpretation of a grill restaurant that puts the island’s bounty front and centre.
The open kitchen is the heart of the space, centred on a custom elevation grill and a wood-fired oven. The menu changes seasonally, reflecting what the land and sea provide. À la carte, feasting, and set lunch options are available, with dietary requirements gladly accommodated for vegetarians, pescatarians, and vegans. The cooking is straightforward, letting the quality of the produce speak. For a more intimate view, the Chef’s counter seats up to four right at the kitchen pass.
Next to the dining room, in what was once Jersey’s original Harbourmaster’s office, the wine bar welcomes walk-ins for cocktails, an interesting wine list, and small plates – including wood-fired bread. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed, with a reverence for local ingredients that never feels stiff. Workshop coffee is also served here.
Pêtchi’s commitment to its craft has earned a Michelin Recommended award for 2026, a nod to its distinctive place in Jersey’s dining scene. It is a restaurant that feels of its island, serving modern cuisine with a Basque accent, always anchored by the fire.
